Botox, short for botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In cosmetic dentistry, Botox injections are used to temporarily reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines by paralyzing or weakening the muscles responsible for creating those lines. By blocking nerve signals to the muscles, Botox smooths wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), forehead creases, and frown lines between the eyebrows. The treatment is minimally invasive, with effects typically lasting several months before gradually wearing off. Botox injections are also used therapeutically in dentistry to manage conditions like temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) and bruxism (teeth grinding), providing relief by relaxing the facial muscles involved in these conditions.
